Fists Flying: The Art of George Bellows

Join Dr. Ann Wagner and artist Robert Bean as they present a two-part workshop on the life and work of George Bellows (1882-1925), an American artist and realist known for his depictions of New York urban life. One of the more acclaimed artists of his time, the drawings Bellows produced are as vibrant and full of energy as the city and the people he depicted.

In the lecture part of this workshop Dr. Wagner will give you an overview of Bellows, his life, his work, and some of the techniques he used in producing his work. You’ll see preparatory drawings as well as drawings that were made for their own sake.

In the figure drawing part of this workshop Robert will lead you through the use of gesture drawing, showing how Bellows made excellent use of this technique. You will also examine the motion of action poses, with the model creating a series of sequential poses to show an action in motion, recreating some of the same poses that Bellows had in his drawings.

The lecture part of the workshop starts at 9:30 a.m. CST and runs about an hour plus time for questions.

The figure drawing workshop starts at 12:30 p.m. CST and runs two hours with a draped model.

Both sessions are broadcast over Zoom.
